Forms of user driven innovation

On our reserach we have uncovered severeal ways of working with user driven innovation in a company perspektiv. We have developed a figure with 2 dimensions illustrating how users can be a part of an innovation process: A user can either be directly or indirectly involved in the innovation process, and the knowledge being tapped from the user can be related to either acknowledged or unackacknowledged needs. This gives 4 broad areas of how companies can work with user driven innovation: a) User tests, based on marketing understanding; user ethnography, where users are observed and interviewed; user innovation, where advanced users innovate together with the company; and user participation, where users partiticate in shaping the ideas for the innovation. Great experiences in Chicago at EPIC

We are back in Copenhagen again after meeting with many interesting people in Chicago at the EPIC conference! It was useful for our project purpose to see that so many companies, especially in the US, are using ethnografic methods to develop front end innovations. After all the intelectual stimulation we also had time for some cultural stimulation!

The companies we interview

The figure shows the innovation process which most companies use - depicted in 8 steps. We are looking for companies that involve users in these steps.

The companies we are interviewing regarding an innovation project fulfill 3 criteria: 1) They have involved users in the innovation process 2) The project is completed and a product or service is launced on the market 3) The project can show results such as e.g. sales or improved processes

Welcome to Innovation with users

Hello to all interested!
We are a team in FORA (Erhvervs- og Byggestyrelsens enhed for forskning og analyse) in Denmark who are looking for companies that involve users in the innovation process.

This blog is for all the people we meet and interview - and anyone interested in innovation.

We are starting in Denmark - interviewing all the great companies such as Lego, Danisco and Novo Nordisk. Once we have found all the innovative companies in this country, we will be looking abroad - to the US, the UK and Europe - and what about Japan??

Do you know any companies that have involved users in the innovation process when developing new products or services?? We would love to know!

Next week we will be in Chicago attending EPIC - maybe we will meet you there and you can tell us your company's story!

If you want to know more have a look at: http://www.foranet.dk/Om%20FORA/Medarbejdere/Analytikere/Data/Tanja%20Bisgaard.aspx

Can't wait to hear from you! Lise, Josefine, Casper and Tanja
